On January 23, 1960 Jacques Piccard and Lt. Don Walsh USN, inside
the submersible Trieste, make a record dive to 35,800 feet to the
bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot on the planet. This
record still stands today.
Strapped to the outside of Trieste during this dive was a specially
designed Rolex Submariner "Piccard" model. This watch survived a
pressure of over 1086 atmospheres (seven tons psi). When the
submersible surfaced , the watch was found to be in perfect working
order without any evidence of moisture in the case.
